It was a gradual process, for him to break out of habit and became one with himself, rather than the shape his parents wanted him to be.
Elijah was terrified at first. He didn't know where to step, hell—he didn't even know where he was allowed to look.
His entire life, his parents had been tiptoeing every s i n g l e thing that he does—what he he had to say and what he had to be.
Be a prodigy, they said.
Make us proud, they said.
And he did.
His room is filled with countless shiny trophies from prestigious ballet competitions, the clean pale walls adorned with his own face, his own empty, blank stares looking down at him.
It makes him shudder sometimes. To see his own reflection looking like that, looking lifeless and l o s t.
Ballet was a hobby his parents enforced on him since he was a child, but it grew to be a p a s s i o n, and Elijah loves it with every fiber of his being. He breathes in the serenity that it brings, the graceful spin of his hips, the tension on his back as he leaps.
He loved it, but it made him feel c a g e d.
As the day passed, he began to thrive on recklessness. On being able to give up control. Elijah wanted to tug the restrains on his wrists and let his skin bleed.
One night, he went out.
It was an ordinary night, except it wasn't.
Elijah woke up the next morning in cold sweat and a heavy heart.
The thing is, he already had an inkling that he was different. He could hear voices. He could feel someone else's mind and explore the depth. But it was only a bare shimmer, hovering on the top of his head—the powers weren't filled to the brim.
It had always been like that for as long as he could remember, so it didn't occur to him that it wasn't o r d i n a r y.
He kept it a secret for a long time. He held it in and never paid it much attention, never bothered to use it for his own good.
Elijah knew his parents would be confused and disappointed, had never wanted him to be anything other than the little boxes they had provided for him.
That morning, though—it was different.
He was n e w.
He felt it, in his fingertips and in his bones, the force that was begging to be let out, and he finally let go.
His parents were angry.
They saw him, g l o w i n g, his skin turned to beautiful reflected lights, shiny and smooth, stiff and d i f f e r e n t.
Elijah was actually happy. He felt like he was finally himself.
But.
Mother looked disgusted. Father was clearly displeased.
Elijah wanted to cry, wanted to scream that 'hey! I'm your fucking son! For once in your goddamn life, please act like I'm your son!'
All they said was,
'Elijah Hwang, is this permanent? Can you go back to normal?'
That was all it took for Elijah to finally understood and to break.
He looked at them, teary eyed, head ducked down, and desperately wanted to reach out.
He just wanted them to love him, for God's sake.
Not as the dancing prodigy.
Or the gifted kid.
But simply as their son.
Elijah felt the force again, on the top of his head, but this time he didn't hold back.
Mother. Father. Please love me.
Their eyes immediately turned bright.
Elijah spent hours, days, nights finding a home. A shelter for someone like him.
The Avengers Initiative was located in South Korea. He was in Chicago.
Elijah put another spell on his parents and went alone.
It was about time he broke free.

hwang possesses the ability to transform his body into a flexible organic diamond form. if he is rendered unconscious, his body will automatically transform into its normal state. this transformation also alters his personality, causing him to become rather cold-hearted and to lose his empathy for others.
